The Girls in the Band
Women have long been overlooked as vocalists and pianists in the jazz world. Little is known about the incredibly skilled female trumpet players, saxophonists, and drummers who fought for recognition but were denied important work by men who didn't want women on their bandstands. This video follows the history of all-girl bands, as well as the hardships of the few who managed to break through male barriers, to the present day, where highly gifted young women are competing with the best jazz musicians of their time.
