During World War II, Nazi Germany maintained its occupation of Poland. Hans was a good student in the past, but he has now gone on to become an SS officer and is now working at the Auschwitz-Birkenau concentration camp. Hans starts to come to terms with the terrible reality of the situation when he is given a commission by his superior commander to construct an effective gas chamber. This causes him to grasp the extent of the atrocities in which he is complicit.
