In a small, politically unstable Latin American country, the plot revolves around half-English, half-Latino doctor Eduardo Plarr, who had fled his birthplace in search of a better life for himself and his family. The journey takes him through a variety of characters, including British Consul Charley Fortnum, a representative in Latin America who is seeking to prevent Revolution from taking place in his country. He is also a recovering alcoholic who harbors remorse. Another person the doctor meets is Clara, with whom he immediately falls in love, but there is a problem: Clara is Charley's wife, and the doctor cannot be with her because she is his wife.
