Hugo Archibald works as a doctor and is known for bringing home a broad array of unusual animal species from his travels. 'Jennie', a chimpanzee, is the most recent animal that he has brought home with him. Andreas believes that Dr. Archibald does not care about him because he is not at home very often. Moreover, Lea, his wife, does not want Jennie and claims that she is a source of contention. In spite of this, she quickly becomes popular with the kids. One of Jennie's distinguishing characteristics is that she is now learning to communicate and understand sign language. In the course of the novel, Jennie becomes an essential member of the Archibald family, and Dr. Archibald's son, Andrew, forms a deep bond with her. Jennie enjoys many of the same things that Andrew enjoys, such as baseball and comics. Andrew's mother, Jennie, is also there for him when he and his father argue. Jennie begins training with a doctor named Pamela Prentiss. She objects to the manner Jennie is being cared for and is perceived as being disrespectful of the Archibalds and their children. While she attempts to teach Jennie sign language in a way that Jennie does not comprehend, Lea discovers a method that Jennie does understand.
