After learning that his gangster boss is on trial for murder, a mob member known as "the Teacher" instructs Annie Laird that she must persuade her fellow jurors to return a not-guilty judgment, with the implied threat that he will kill her son Oliver if she does not succeed. However, as it becomes evident that the mobsters may be trying to silence her permanently, she dispatches Oliver abroad to gather proof of the mobsters' scheme against her, setting the stage for a final confrontation.
