Ancient China is in upheaval during the period of the three kingdoms' warfare. General Cao Cao (Jiang Wen), the real power behind the Emperor, enlists the assistance of Guan Yu, the greatest warrior the kingdom has ever seen, in order to unify the country (Donnie Yen). In order to persuade the great warrior Liu Bei (Alex Fong) to battle, Cao Cao kidnaps his beloved Qi Lan (Sun Li), who is a close companion of Liu Bei's (Alex Fong) adversary Cao Cao. After guiding Cao Cao's armies to victory, Guan Yu embarks on a journey with Qi Lan to rejoin Liu Bei's forces. However, Cao Cao has determined that he is too dangerous to be allowed to live, and on the voyage he will have to fight all of the forces under the command of the Emperor who have been dispatched to destroy him.
