The actual account of musician Wladyslaw Szpilman's experiences during the Nazi occupation of Warsaw. When the Jews of the city are pushed into a ghetto, Szpilman finds work playing at a café. When his family is deported in1942, he stays behind, works as a laborer for a while, and eventually goes into hiding in the war-ravaged city.
