Poland in the first days of 1945. Under the cover of punishing "national traitors," the Communist Security Service in a newly freed country is systematically exterminating its political opponents. On the grounds of the former Nazi concentration camp known as Zgoda/Reconciliation, they establish a work camp for Germans, Silesians, and Poles. In an effort to rescue the Polish prisoner Anna, Franek takes a job as a camp guard. He has no idea that his German friend Erwin, also a prisoner, has secretly loved the same girl for years. Franek joins the communists in the vain belief that he can use the system to his advantage.
