A young poet named Hoffman broods over his failed relationships in this film adaptation of the Offenbach opera. First, his relationship with Olympia is shattered when he discovers she is actually a mechanical woman created by a scientist. Then he thinks a beautiful prostitute loves him, only to discover that she was recruited by the nefarious Dapertutto to fake her feelings for him. Finally, his final lover is killed by a magical spell.
