During the early 1930s, a disillusioned World War One flying ace is eking out a life as a barnstorming pilot/parachutist in order to make ends meet. A newspaperman from New Orleans bumps across the pilot at a low-rent carnival and gets captivated with his fall from grace. He is also lured into the pilot's iconoclastic and independent way of life, and he finds himself drawn to the pilot's patient and understanding wife.
