J.R. is a fatherless kid growing up in the glow of a bar where the bartender, his Uncle Charlie, is the sharpest as well as most colorful of a variety of eccentric and demonstrative father figures. As the young boy's established mother struggles to offer her child with opportunities denied to her-- and leave the run-down house of her horrendous if begrudgingly supportive father-- J.R. begins to gamely, otherwise always beautifully, seek his enchanting and expert desires, with one foot persistently placed in Uncle Charlie's bar.
