This simple love story turns tragic in 1957. Guy Foucher, a French auto mechanic who is 20 years old, has fallen in love with Geneviève Emery, who is 17. Geneviève works in her mother's stylish but financially troubled umbrella shop. Guy and Geneviève make love the night before he leaves for Algeria to fight for two years. She gets pregnant, and then she has to decide whether to wait for Guy to come back or to marry a rich diamond merchant.
