In New England during the 1630s, William and Katherine live a devout Christian life with their five children while homesteading on the edge of an impenetrable wilderness. They are forced to leave their settlement after William disobeys the local church, which causes them to be banished from their community. The family turns against one another after the disappearance of their newborn boy and the unexplained failure of their crops.
