The youngsters of Ballydowse and Carrickdowse engage in combat in which they cut off their captive opponents' buttons, shoelaces, and underpants. This is to draw the boys' attention away from their parents. They fight in swarms of dozens, flinging stones and severing their opponents' buttons, among other things. And occasionally, they engage in combat entirely naked and exposed. In one such scene, approximately 30 males return after a battle to a barn-house to celebrate their win, only to discover several girls waiting for them, and they become extremely embarrassed at the loss of their privacy.
