An aged cowboy named Will Penny accepts a job on a ranch that requires him to patrol the property's perimeter in search of trespassers or squatters. He discovers that a woman whose guide to Oregon ditched her and her son has taken over his high-mountain cottage. For fear of upsetting his mother and child, he agrees to let them stay in the cabin until spring thaw. In addition to the snow thawing, the lonely man and woman soon forget their mutual antagonism and begin forming a strong love for one another.
