With his life on the line, Ichi finds solace in a favorite village. It has been taken over by Boss Masagoro, the son of a merchant accused of stealing gold from the shogunate, since his last visit. The employer has hired Yojimbo as his hard-drinking enforcer, but Yojimbo is also a shogunate spy on the lookout for the gold, as well as in love with Umeno, the merchant's unhappy mistress. Ichi takes a job as a merchant's masseur and uses his employer's money to buy Umeno's freedom. This humiliates Yojimbo, who breaks his agreement with Ichi to cause strife between father and son and their gangs. As the two sides fight, Ichi discovers the gold and sets up a last battle.
