They probably seemed like good ideas at the time, as the expression goes. The world is littered with instances of magnificent engineering projects and buildings designed to make life simpler for those who used them, astound those who saw them, and profit those who ordered, developed, and built them. They were fantasies come true. To get them built in the first place, huge engineering challenges had to be addressed, impediments had to be overcome, and new inventions had to be used. Unfortunately, many of these extraordinary structures have now been abandoned, discarded like giant, out-of-date toys that will never be used for the purposes for which they were designed.
