Catherine Chandler, a homicide detective, is known for her intelligence and no-nonsense approach to solving cases. She was spared from the same fate as her mother by an unknown person or object when she was a teenager when she witnessed the death of her mother at the hands of two gunmen. Several years have passed, and Catherine has been investigating a murder when she comes across a clue that points her in the direction of Vincent Keller, who was apparently murdered in the year 2002. Catherine finds out that Vincent is indeed still alive and that it was actually he who rescued her all those years ago. Vincent has been in hiding for the past ten years to protect his secret. When he is enraged, he transforms into a terrifying beast, and he is unable to control his increased strength and heightened senses. This has forced him to live outside of traditional society for unexplained reasons, which has forced him to live alone.
