The novel Daniel Deronda by George Eliot was turned into a British TV serial drama by Andrew Davies. The serial was put together by Louis Marks and directed by Tom Hooper. It was first shown on BBC One in three parts from November 23 to December7, 2002. Hugh Dancy played Daniel Deronda, Romola Garai played Gwendolen Harleth, Hugh Bonneville played Henleigh Grandcourt, and Jodhi May played Mirah Lapidoth in the serial. The money for the co-production came from WGBH Boston. Louis Marks wanted to make a movie based on the book at first, but he gave up after a long and fruitless search for actors. It took another five years for the drama to be shown on TV. From May to August, 11 weeks of filming took place in England, Scotland, and Malta. The serial was the last thing Marks did for TV before he died in 2010.
