Anna, who is only nineteen years old and lives in the Russian town of Zatonsk at the tail end of the nineteenth century, comes to the startling realization that she possesses magical abilities. She is being tormented by the ghosts of those who have passed on, all of whom implore her for assistance. Anna is able to investigate and solve a variety of baffling cases with the assistance of her visions, many of which have stumped the authorities. Yakov Shtolman, an experienced detective who is 37 years old and is assigned to the police department, is partnered with Anna and becomes her companion in the pursuit of criminals.
