Dexter's Laboratory is a Cartoon Network animated comic science fiction children's television series developed by Genndy Tartakovsky. Dexter, a young prodigy with a secret laboratory packed with his collection of inventions, is the protagonist of the series. He is always at odds with his sister Dee Dee, who, despite his best attempts, always manages to obtain entry, as well as his arch-rival and neighbor Mandark. Dial M for Monkey is about Dexter's pet lab monkey-turned-superhero, while The Justice Friends is about three superhero roommates. Tartakovsky based the series on student films he produced while attending the California Institute of the Arts and proposed it to Hanna-animated Barbera's shorts showcase World Premiere Toons. Cartoon Network ran four shorts in 1995 and 1996 before ordering a 13-episode first season on April28, 1996. Tartakovsky departed the series in 1999 to focus on Samurai Jack and Star Wars: Clone Wars. The network restarted the series in 2001 with a new production crew at Cartoon Network Studios, and the series ended on November 20, 2003 after 26 more episodes.
