Yasuhiro Nightow's Gungrave is a Japanese animated television series based on the computer game of the same name. Madhouse Studios produces the series, which is directed by Toshiyuki Tsuru and based on a screenplay by Yousuke Kuroda. The story covers the ascent of Brandon Heat and Harry MacDowell through the ranks of the Millennion criminal organization. From October6, 2003 to March29,2004, a total of twenty-six episodes of Gungrave aired on TV Tokyo. As with the Gungrave video game and its sequel Gungrave: Overdose, Tsuneo Imahori composed the series' soundtrack, including the opening theme. In2003, Geneon Entertainment, formerly known as Pioneer Entertainment, announced the North American license for Gungrave. After Geneon halted distribution of its own titles in October2007, Geneon Entertainment and Funimation Entertainment announced an agreement to distribute certain titles in North America on July3, 2008. Funimation Entertainment will assume exclusive rights to the manufacturing, marketing, sales, and distribution of chosen titles, while Geneon Entertainment will maintain the license. On December30,2008, it was reported that Gungrave was among the games covered by the arrangement. As of November26,2010, Funimation has obtained all necessary licenses for the anime series. The anime series returned to U.S. television on the Funimation Channel on May11, 2011.
