This film is based on Truman Capote's psychologically penetrating, eerily detailed nonfiction book. Twenty-year-old Dick Hickock hears from a cellmate that a wealthy rancher kept $10,000 in cash in a home safe. When he is paroled, Dick convinces 20-year-old ex-con Perry Smith to go after the cache with him. Dick and Perry break into Herb Clutter's home in Holcomb, Kansas, during the night of November 1959. Infuriated by the lack of a safe haven, they arouse the sleeping family and murder them all in cold blood. The bodies are discovered by two friends who arrive prior to Sunday church service. The murders stun the residents of the little village on the Great Plains, where doors are often open.
