Stepbrothers Kohtaro Minami and Nobuhiko Akizuki were subjected to a cyborg operation after being kidnapped by the cult Gorgom on the night of their 19th birthday. The goal of the procedure was to transform them into potential candidates for the position of Gorgom Creation King. Both of them have been given the title of Century King, and they are destined to face off against one another in a decisive fight; the victor of this conflict will succeed the current Creation King as the ruler of all creation. With the assistance of his foster father, Kohtaro was able to evade capture and turn his back on Gorgom before to undergoing the final stage of the operation, which was to undergo brainwashing. Soon after, he learns the horrifying truth from his stepfather, which is that Gorgom was the one who murdered his real parents and that Kohtaro and Nobuhiko were given their nicknames of "Black Sun" and "Shadow Moon" since they were both born on the same day as a solar eclipse. Taking on the identity of Kamen Rider Black, Kohtaro was resolute in his mission to save his stepbrother from the clutches of Gorgom while simultaneously defending Japan. On the other hand, later on in the series, Nobuhiko transformed into Shadow Moon and faced off against Kohtaro in a battle to determine who would succeed Kohtaro as the new Creation King.
