Life on Mars is an ABC science fiction criminal drama television series that ran from October 9, 2008 to April 1, 2009. It is an adaption of the BBC's BAFTA-winning original UK series of the same name. Kudos Film & Television, 20th Century Fox Television, and ABC Studios collaborated on the series' production. The series follows New York City police investigator Sam Tyler, who regains consciousness in 1973 after being hit by a car in 2008. The series, which straddled numerous genres such as thriller, science fiction, and police procedural, remained vague about its fundamental premise, with the character himself unsure about his condition. Harvey Keitel, Jonathan Murphy, Michael Imperioli, and Gretchen Mol also appeared in the series. Life on Mars received great acclaim for its premise, performances, and depiction of the 1970s, but viewership dropped after its premiere and a two-month hiatus. On March 2, 2009, ABC announced that it will not order a second season. On September 29, 2009, the full series was released on DVD.
