During the 1970s and 1980s, Matador was a Danish television series that aired for two seasons. Between 1929 and1947, it takes place in the made-up Danish town of Korsbaek. The name Matador was taken from the localised edition of the boardgame Monopoly, also the series' tentative English title. Also, in modern Danish, the word "matador" is often used to describe a business tycoon. In the series, it refers to Mads Skjern's skill as a self-made businessman. Matador was created by author Lise Nrgaard and most of the episodes were written by her, Karen Smith, Jens Louis Petersen, and Paul Hammerich. The famous Danish director Erik Balling was in charge of the show. The series is one of the best-known and most-watched Danish TV shows. It was made by the public service channel Danmarks Radio, which has been developing Danish TV drama for a long time. The series has become a big part of how Danes see themselves today. This is partly because it was able to mix melodrama with a distinct warm Danish sense of humor in its portrayal of characters, who were played by a wide range of the most popular Danish actors at the time.
