Monsters is a syndicated horror anthology series that initially aired from 1988 to 1991 and aired again in the 1990s on the Sci-Fi Channel. NBC Universal's horror/suspense-themed cable channel Chiller airs Monsters in intermittent weekday marathons as of 2011. Monsters shared the same producer as Tales from the Darkside and in some ways outperformed the show. Nonetheless, it differed in some areas. While Tales occasionally included science fiction and fantasy stories, this series was primarily horror. As the title suggests, each episode of Monsters focused on a different monster, ranging from a mechanical puppet from a fictional children's television show to mutant, armed lab rodents. Similar to Tales, the stories in Monsters were rarely conventional action storylines and frequently featured an ironic twist in which a character's arrogance or avarice led to horrific consequences. Adding to this was a sense of humor that is typically absent from horror productions, which in some circumstances may have served to lighten the mood of the audience, but in most cases contributed to the overall unsettling nature of the production.
