During the time of the Warring Period, the Western Wei were responsible for the enslavement of a significant number of civilians. The wealthy lords decide to make the slave girl Chu Qiao their next hunting prey, so they toss her and the other slaves into a forest and set them free there. Yan Xun, the Prince of Northern Wei, comes to her rescue and saves her life. After that, she is inducted into a prominent Yuwen family, where she watches her ancestors' deadly quest for control. Upon seeing this, she makes a solemn oath that she and her younger sister will immediately leave the area and get away from the danger. In spite of this, Yuwen Yue takes an interest in her, and she is put through rigorous training while simultaneously developing a sense of friendship with Yan Xun. Unfortuitously, Western Wei goes into combat, and Yan Xun's family is wiped out in the process. After what happened, Yan Xun becomes more ambitious and nasty in order to exact revenge for the things and people he's lost. He has reservations about Chu Qiao and frequently takes advantage of her loyalty and love, oblivious to both the state of their relationship and the price he will have to pay to attain power. He does this despite the fact that he is aware of the consequences of his actions. Chu Qiao eventually decides to end her engagement with Yan Xun because she is dissatisfied with him as a partner and instead chooses to fight alongside Yuwen Yue. As a result, Yan Xun's schemes to exact revenge are foiled. She is finally successful in persuading Yuwen to end slavery in the land, earning her a place in the hearts and minds of the people as a successful military strategist and female commander.
