Suspense is an American anthology TV show that ran from 1949 to 1954 on CBS Television. It was based on the same-named radio show that ran from 1942 to 1962. The show, like many of the first ones, was broadcast live from New York City. It was paid for by the Auto-Lite company, and each episode was introduced by Rex Marshall, who talked about Auto-Lite spark plugs, car batteries, headlights, and other car parts. Some of the early scripts were based on radio scripts for Suspense, while others were written specifically for television. Like the radio show, many of the scripts were based on well-known authors' classic works. Stories by Edgar Allan Poe, Agatha Christie, and Charles Dickens, as well as Roald Dahl and Gore Vidal, were used in the series. Bela Lugosi, Boris Karloff, Franchot Tone, Robert Emhardt, Leslie Nielsen, Lloyd Bridges, and many more famous actors were on the show. The show was broadcast live, but most of the episodes were recorded on kinescope. But only about 90 of the original 260 episodes are still around today.
