The Affair examines the emotional repercussions of an adulterous affair between Noah Solloway and Alison Lockhart after they meet in the Long Island tourist town of Montauk. Noah, a schoolteacher in New York City with one published novel (A Person Who Visits a Place), is struggling to write his second book. He is happily married with four children, but resents being financially dependent on his father-in-law. Alison is a young waitress attempting to rebuild her life and marriage following the sad death of her kid. The account of the affair is given separately from the male and female perspectives, each with various memory biases.
