The Andy Griffith Show ran from October3, 1960 until April1, 1968 on CBS. Andy Griffith plays the widowed Mayberry sheriff. Barney Fife, Aunt Bee, and Opie, his precocious son, complicate his life. Ne'er-do-wells, incompetent buddies, and temperamental girlfriends complicate his existence. Andy Griffith noted in a Today Show interview: "Despite being shot in the 1960s, it had a '30s vibe. We did it once." The series never ranked lower than eighth and ended at number one. TV Guide ranks it as the 9th-best American TV show. Knotts and Bavier earned a combined six Emmys over the show's eight-season run. The sitcom inspired a spin-off, Gomer Pyle, U.S.M.C., a sequel, Mayberry R.F.D., and a reunion telemovie, Return to Mayberry. The show's popularity has spawned merchandise. The full series is on DVD and airs on TV Land. Netflix currently has all eight seasons.
