The Crystal Maze was a popular British game show that was broadcast on Channel 4 in the United Kingdom from February 15, 1990, until August 10, 1995. The show was created by Chatsworth Television and aired over those years. There was one series broadcast each year, with Richard O'Brien and Ed Tudor-Pole alternating as the host for the first four series and the latter two series, respectively. Including commercial breaks, each show lasted for a total of one hour. Jacques Antoine, the creator of the original French version of the show Fort Boyard, was supposed to be involved in the production of the British version of the show. However, because the set for the French show was unavailable, the British producer Malcolm Heyworth had to completely reimagine the show. He decided to use themed zones as a way to keep the show looking visually interesting. The series takes place in "The Crystal Maze," an alternate reality game that comprises four distinct "zones" that are located in different eras and parts of the universe. A group of six competitors compete against one another in a variety of challenges in the hope of winning "time crystals." Each crystal the team collects grants them an additional five seconds of time within "The Crystal Dome," the focal point of the maze in which the competitors take part in their decisive test. The construction of the maze incurred a cost of 250,000 pounds and took up an area equal to that of two football fields. When it was at the height of its popularity, the program was consistently seen by between 4 and 6 million people, making it the most watched program ever broadcast on Channel 4.
