The Hakkenden is a two-part OVA series by AIC, with the second segment dubbed Shinsh. In 1999, Shin Hakkenden, a sequel television series, debuted. The animation is based on Kyokutei Bakin's epic novel Nans Satomi Hakkenden, which was written in the later half of the Edo period. The book is the longest work of classic Japanese literature, comprising 106 volumes. The Hakkenden is renowned for its innovative animation style, which varies between numerous various visual styles throughout the course of the series. In addition, the series is known for its extensive use of symbolic images and ideas, which allows it to blur the border between animation and art.
