The Love Boat was an American television series that was shown on the ABC Television Network from September 24, 1977, all the way through May 24, 1986. The show took place on a cruise ship and followed the lives of the passengers and crew of the ship. In the role of the ship's captain, Gavin MacLeod played a starring role in the production. It was a regular feature on ABC's popular Saturday night program, which also featured Fantasy Island up until that show's cancellation in 1984. The show was based on the 1976 made-for-television movie, which in turn was based on the nonfiction book The Love Boats written by Jeraldine Saunders, who had worked as a cruise director in real life. Before the series really started airing, there were going to be two more TV movies. Aaron Spelling served as the series' executive producer. During the 1960s and 1980s, Spelling was responsible for producing a number of popular television shows for ABC. On TV Guide's list of the 100 Greatest Episodes of All Time, the episode titled "Hidden Treasure," "Picture from the Past," and "Ace's Salary" was placed as No. 82 in 1997. The Love Boat aired for a total of ten seasons, not counting any specials.
