It's not unusual for Miaka, a junior high school student in Tokyo, to find herself in the midst of typical conflicts with her mother and picking where to go out for dinner with her friends. When she and her companion Yui discover a fascinating book called the Universe of the Four Gods in the library, their lives are permanently altered. As soon as the girls arrive in this new world, they're besieged by a gang of would-be slavers. Fortunately for them, there is a handsome young man in town! They're thrilled to have him after saving them from the would-be slavers, but it turns out that his true motivation is financial gain. Whenever Miaka isn't around, Tamahome and Yui disappear. A possible motive for her disappearance would be to sell her. Miaka didn't realize that Yui had returned to the actual world. In the library, she can only read on as her childhood friend sets out to discover the enigmatic youngster and save her friend's life by tracking him down. Miaka's fate isn't what either of the girls expect, and now she must become the Priestess of Suzaku and preserve their world in order to return to her own world.
