The X Factor is an Australian reality television singing competition, based on the original British series, that seeks to discover new singing talent. Since the second season, the show has shown from July/August through the finale in November. The Seven Network presently broadcasts The X Factor, which is produced by FremantleMedia Australia. The term "X Factor" refers to a vocal talent that is "special" and "something" that contributes to stardom. In 2005, Network Ten owned the rights to The X Factor, but dropped it after the first season due to low ratings. In 2010, the Seven Network engaged in a "bidding war" for the rights to the show, which it eventually won, and a second season was subsequently produced. The X Factor was renewed following the cancellation of Network Ten's very successful Australian Idol program. Additionally, it is shown on TV3 in New Zealand. In 2005 and 2010, Network Ten and 7Two each aired two seasons of The Xtra Factor. In 2011, the third season of the show was not renewed. In 2005, Kate Ceberano, Mark Holden, and John Reid were the founding members of the judging panel. The judging panel was replaced with Ronan Keating, Guy Sebastian, Natalie Imbruglia, and Kyle Sandilands when the program was resurrected in 2010. Melanie Brown and Natalie Bassingthreighte have replaced Imbruglia and Sandilands for the third season. In the fifth season, in place of Brown and Sebastian, Dannii Minogue and Redfoo joined the panel. Originally, during the televised audition phases of The X Factor, participants sang in a "audition room" in front of only the judges; however, beginning with series two, all contestants sing on stage in front of the judges and a live audience. The successful acts then advance to the next phase of the competition, "bootcamp" and then "home visits," where the judges limit their category down to three acts who will proceed to the live shows, where the audience votes for their favorite act after weekly performances by the participants.
