Total Wipeout is a British game show that premiered on 3 January 2009, hosted by Richard Hammond and Amanda Byram. Every week, 20 contestants compete in a series of challenges to earn £10,000. These challenges are typically located in enormous pools of water or mud and comprise large assault courses that contestants must complete. Total Wipeout is a licensed version of Wipeout, an Endemol show that debuted in the United States in 2008. The name has been significantly changed to avoid confusion with the BBC version of the earlier game show of the same name. The BBC announced on March 29, 2012, that Total Wipeout would be cancelled after the sixth season. According to the Daily Mirror, a BBC representative stated, "After four very successful series of Total Wipeout, and one series of Winter Wipeout, the BBC has decided that the next series, set to transmit later this year, will be the final." The final ten episodes of Series 5 premiered on BBC One on August 18, 2012, bringing the show's four-year run to a conclusion before 2013.
