"13 Demons" is a rare medieval board game that Gary and his buddies come upon while out gaming, visiting renaissance fairs, and engaging in other less-than-savory activities. As they learn more about the game, they realize that it has a shady past and that it was outlawed from most countries many years ago for bizarre and enigmatic reasons, including unexplained deaths that were ascribed to it. The goal is to release the Realm of Darkhaven from the clutches of the 13 Demons of the Apocalypse, who have taken over the realm. They dismiss it as an urban legend and proceed to play; however, they are unaware that the 13 Demons are currently roaming the Earth in the form of people masquerading as humans. It takes them a while to become absorbed by the game, which gradually seduces them into believing they are "The Golden Paladins" and on a holy quest to save the world. After learning of a number of local deaths caused by assailants wearing body armor wielding tree branches, baseball bats, hammers, and other weapons, the thin line between reality and fantasy is shattered, and the horrifying realization that they have gotten themselves into a situation far beyond their control sets in.
