Per makes the decision to leave Jutland and his upbringing in a strict religious environment in order to find happiness elsewhere. He flees from his family, including his patriarch father, and sails ship for Copenhagen, where he hopes to pursue a career as an engineer. Meanwhile, he is engaged in an ambitious wind and wave energy project, which is so far ahead of its time that his academics regard him as mad and excessively self-confident, and which he denies. Per's initiative, on the other hand, is a success, and he ends up marrying the lovely Jakobe, who happens to be the daughter of a wealthy Jewish family. On the surface, it appears like Per's happiness has been achieved. Per's childhood, on the other hand, continues to haunt him, and his religious family is unable to embrace his new existence. Despite his good fortune and success, Per is unable to completely untie the ties that bind him to his rigid religious upbringing, and he now fears that he will follow in his father's patriarchal footsteps.
