A young boy and a stray dog who is really good at playing basketball become fast friends. After his father died in an accident, Josh Framm and his family move to the small town of Fernfield, Washington, to start over. Josh is the new kid in town, and he doesn't have any friends. He's also too shy to try out for the basketball team. Instead, he likes to practice by himself on a court that has been left empty. There, he makes friends with a lost golden retriever named Buddy. Josh is surprised to learn that Buddy likes basketball, that is, playing basketball, and that he is good at it. Josh makes the school team in the end, and Buddy becomes the team mascot. Josh and Buddy get the most attention during halftime. Buddy's half-time act gets a lot of attention from the media. Buddy's mean former owner, Norm Snively, comes up with a plan to make money off of the dog's fame, and it looks like they will have to be apart.
