It's not easy being eleven-year-old Akeelah Anderson. Her father is dead, her mother ignores her, and her brother is running with the neighborhood gangbangers. Her life is everything but easy. Although she's talented, she's being held back by her surroundings. Because of her repeated absences, Akeelah's school's principal threatened her with detention unless she took part in a spelling bee. Surprise and embarrassment ensue when she wins the competition. This year's regional bee requires her to seek help from Dr. Larabee, an English professor at the university. With a shot at competing in the Scripps National Spelling Bee, Akeelah may give her hometown something to be proud of— but only if she can overcome her own fears and the distractions of home life before that happens. While she is battling her own demons, she must also battle a field of more experienced and privileged spellers.
