Jake Huard, who comes from a family of shipbuilders, promised his dying mother that he would make it to Anapolis Naval Academy. He is selected despite receiving questionable grades as a result of persistently nagging a member of Congress. Jake quickly demonstrates that he is not up to par academically once he enters. As a result of being constantly pushed to his limits and being called out as the 'over-cocky' reason for everyone's misery, Jake comes close to quitting, but after being confronted by his gloating father, he returns just in time. Jake's companions, as well as Senor Ali, his future boyfriend, come to his aid, and he discovers a sport in which he may excel: the 'brigade' boxing tournament, which is open to all ranks.
