Adele August, a single mother in this adaptation of the Mona Simpson novel, has a lousy relationship with money and even worse when it comes to making financial judgments. Her prim and proper daughter, Ann (who goes by the name of Ann) is a successful high school student with dreams to attend Ivy League schools. When Adele decides to uproot the family from their home in the Midwest and relocate them to Beverly Hills, Calif., in order to pursue her dreams of Hollywood success, Ann becomes increasingly dissatisfied with her mother's irresponsible and impulsive behavior.
