Newlyweds Corie and Paul Bratter occupy a sixth-floor flat in Greenwich Village in this film based on a Neil Simon play. Corie is a free spirit, and Paul Bratter is a strict lawyer. Soon after their marriage, Corie attempts to locate a companion for her mother, Ethel, who is now living alone, and arranges for Ethel to live with their next-door neighbor, Victor. During a double date, the young couple encounters inappropriate behavior, which leads to disagreement and the possibility of divorce.
