Redmond Barry is a young farm lad living in a small village in Ireland during the eighteenth century. He is head over heels in love with his cousin Nora Brady. When Nora's engagement to the British Captain John Quin is announced, Barry issues a challenge to a battle with pistols to John Quin. He is successful and manages to flee to Dublin, but on the way there he is robbed. Barry had no other choice than to enlist in the British Army and fight in the Seven Years War (sometimes known as the "Seven Years War").
