Benediction
The story of the soldier and poet Siegfried Sassoon (1886–1967), who was honored for his bravery on the Western Front and is best known for his angry and caring poems about the First World War, which won him public and critical praise. Sassoon avoided the sentimentality and patriotism of many war poets. Instead, he wrote about the horror and brutality of trench warfare and made fun of generals, politicians, and churchmen for their incompetence and blind support of the war.
