In Asolo, Italy, in March of 1945. Lawyer Ugo Oggiano, a longtime admirer and informant of Livia Mazzion's husband, picks her up in his automobile. As gorgeous and cursed as a pagan deity, Livia's lover Helmut Schultz (a Wermacht lieutenant) has a burning passion for Livia. There are recollections of her catastrophic sexual desertion, one that has broken everything about her life and her fate, as she is swallowed up in the disastrous vortex of sybaritic and bituminous Venice during the course of the journey. As war nears its end, the city is awash in nabobs, officials, military brass, sharks, and other adventurers of all kinds. The heroes' personal defeats intertwine with the public's as historical and political events now strive to settle accounts, but Livia is in for a surprise upon her arrival in Venice.
