The First World War interrupts the love tale of sixteen-year-old Arturs. After losing his mother and his house, he takes solace in joining the army, as this is the first time in the Russian Empire that national battalions are permitted. But battle is nothing like Arturs thought it to be - there is no glory, no justice. It's excruciatingly painful. Arturs is now utterly alone after his father and brother were killed in the war. In addition, no progress has been achieved toward the promised rapid end to the conflict and return home. Arturs finds strength for the final struggle in the idea that only he cares about returning home and that his homeland is a playground for other nations. He returns home to start over, much like his newly established country.
