Songachi, Calcutta's red light area, is the subject of an Oscar-winning documentary on the life of juvenile prostitutes. During the course of her assignment, director Zana Briski met and befriended the children of the prostitutes. It was only when Briski began teaching photography to the youngsters that she realized that they might be able to make a better life for themselves through photography.
