Jesse Aarons spent the entire summer training to become the school's fastest runner. As a result, he is quite frustrated that Leslie Burke, a new student, is faster than both him and everyone else. Despite these and other disparities, such as the fact that she is from the city while he is from the country and that she is rich while he is impoverished, the two quickly become close friends. They rule as king and queen over the realm of Terabithia, which they jointly build and populate with monsters, trolls, ogres, and giants.
